1914 you

If you are reading this, chances are you are a Jehovah Witness or involved with them somehow. You may believe that you have the truth and you believe the Watchtower teachings regarding 1914.

Every person should be able to find out for themselves what is truth :-

Feb 15th Watchtower 1955, Page 125 Paragraph 25:

“Prove what is false and reject it. Prove what is true and hold it fast. Separate the straw from the wheat. Identify the wine that has been adulterated. Settle out the muddying, beclouding falsehoods so that only clear waters of truth remain”.

What does the Watchtower actually teach regarding the year 1914, this post I hope will show you what the original thinking was relating to this year and how it has changed over the years. Throughout this you will find quotes from watchtower literature. Please do not take my word for it and check these references to ensure I am not misquoting the writers of the Watchtower. The original belief from the founder (Charles Taze Russell) was that Armageddon was coming in 1914. He got his date by studying an ancient pyramid:-

Zion’s Watch Tower 1894 Jul 15

This is what Russell wrote regarding this prophecy:

“They are, we believe, God’s dates, not ours. But bear in mind that the end of 1914 is not the date for the beginning, but for the end of the time of trouble.”
Zion’s Watch Tower 1894 Jul 15 p.226

“… the battle of the great day of God Almighty … The date of the close of that “battle” is definitely marked in Scripture as October 1914. It is already in progress, its beginning dating from October, 1874.” Zion’s Watch Tower 1892 Jan 15 p.23

“The seventh trumpet sounds from Aug. 1840, until “the time of trouble,” or day of wrath is ended. Hence, it doubtless ends with the times of the Gentiles, and this forty years of conquest; and therefore, sounds until A. D. 1914; at the end of which, Babylon the great, will have fallen, and the “dragon” be bound: that is, the nations will be subdued, and “the prince of this world cast out.”” Three Worlds and the Harvest of This World (Barbour & Russell, 1877) p.27

“A.D. 33, to A.D. 70 was 36 ½ years; and so from A.D. 1878 to the end of A.D. 1914 is 36 ½ years. And, with the end of A.D. 1914, what God calls Babylon, and what men call Christendom, will have passed away, as already shown in prophecy.” Studies In the Scriptures – Thy Kingdom Come (1891) p.153

“October, 1914, will witness the full end of Babylon, “as a great millstone cast into the sea,” utterly destroyed as a system.” Watch Tower 1911 Jun 15 p.190

When the end of world did not happen, Russell changed his belief to say Christ actually returned in 1914 but had returned invisibly.  However the bible disagrees with his teaching.

Revelation 1:7 “Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him”

It was also taught that when he came back he chose 144,000 people that lived prior to 1914 that were exceptional Jehovah Witnesses and these people would reign with Christ in heaven after they died. This would happen in just one generation.

within one generation

“So it was on this generation that the accumulated judgments were to fall. (Matt. 23:36) This therefore means that from 1914 a generation shall not pass till all is fulfilled, and amidst a great time of trouble.” Watchtower 1951 Jul 1 p.404

Even in 1984 the Watchtower still believed the generation would not die out…

But when the year 2010 came and most of the selected generation had died out, Armageddon still had not arrived….then the doctrine changed?!! “Jesus evidently meant that the lives of the anointed ones who were on hand when the sign began to be evident in 1914 would overlap with the lives of the other anointed ones who would see the start of the great tribulation.” We do not know the exact length of “this generation,” but it includes these two groups whose lives overlap. Even though the anointed vary in age, those in the two groups constituting the generation are contemporaries during the part of the last days. How comforting it is to know that the younger anointed contemporaries of those older anointed ones who discerned the sign when it became evident beginning in 1914 will not die off before the great tribulation starts!” Watchtower 2010 June 15 p.5

Did the light get brighter? Or were the leaders trying to cover up a false teaching?

For it is written… Hebrews 13:8 – Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever

You may feel very comfortable being a Jehovah Witness, you may have many friends and family that are as well. But ask yourself this, do you have the truth? If Jehovah does not change then why do his requirements? Have there been any changes in doctrine since you have been a Jehovah’s Witness? Does God change?

Malachi 3:6 – For I am Jehovah, I have NOT changed; therefore you sons of Jacob are not consumed.

If they are wrong regarding 1914, have they got it wrong regarding the Watchtower being “the truth”?

John 14:5-6 shows what truth is and how we find it.

“Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Jesus IS the way, Jesus IS the truth, Jesus IS the life, Jesus IS YOUR mediator. He did not return in 1914 as every eye did not see (Revelation 1:7) but he has died for YOU to guarantee your salvation if you put your faith in Him and Him alone.

Ephesians 2:8,9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast”. Have you accepted the GIFT of grace? Or are you trying to work for your salvation?

Jesus saves and only through Him do we have salvation. Jesus says in Matthew 11:28 :- “Come to ME all of you who are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest”
